Hacı Nuri Çomu

(1935 – 2020)

Hacı Nuri Çomu, a senior agricultural engineer who laid the foundations of Sunar Investment and whose vision continues to inspire its corporate structure today, was born in Osmaniye in 1935. The son of a draper known for his honesty, diligence and strong commitment to national and spiritual values, Hacı Nuri Çomu came from a family originally from Darende, Malatya.

He completed his primary and secondary education in Osmaniye before graduating from Adana Boys’ High School. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Ankara University with a degree in agricultural engineering, he began his career in agriculture. He was actively involved in the cultivation of both horticultural and field crops, becoming one of the pioneers who brought his knowledge and expertise directly to agricultural practice.

In the early years of his professional career, Hacı Nuri Çomu gained his first experience in the industrial sector by serving as a manager at Akdeniz Yarn Factory alongside his father-in-law, Mehmet Nuri Sabuncu.

In 1974, he laid the foundations of Sunar Investment by establishing Sunar Cotton Ginning and Rice Milling Plant. In the years that followed, he made significant investments in the flour, feed, starch and oil industries, pioneering the development of agriculture-based industry in the region.

Hacı Nuri Çomu left a lasting legacy not only in business but also through his philanthropy and social contributions. In Adana and Osmaniye, he built or contributed to the construction of mosques, schools, bridges and hospitals, while providing scholarships to countless students. In recognition of these contributions, he was awarded the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Distinguished Service Award, which was presented to him by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye.

Established in 2018 and named after him, the Hacı Nuri Çomu Foundation has carried his philanthropic vision into an institutional structure and continues to preserve his legacy through its work in education, healthcare and social assistance.

Hacı Nuri Çomu passed away on December 15, 2020. Throughout more than five decades of entrepreneurship, he successfully combined farming, industrial leadership and management, and is remembered as a pioneering figure who contributed significantly to the development of agriculture-based industry in Türkiye.
